A PAIR OF IRISH BLACK-PAINTED 'HEDGE' CHAIRS
19th century, stamped 'D. CARTIN' for the maker or former owner, with square seats on chamfered block legs, 72.5cm high x 44cm wide x 40cm deep (2)
Provenance: The Les Watts Collection.
Bidding ended. Lot is unsold.
Note: See 'Irish Country Furniture 1700-1950' by Claudia Kinmonth, 1995, page 34. The term ‘hedge chair’ stems from the fact that such chairs were often made by so called ‘hedge carpenters’. The hedge carpenter did not serve the same long apprenticeship as the carpenter, but he ‘could choose part of a tree for the job to be done'.
