The painting is in fairly good condition. It has been relined and restored, but not for many decades. The picture surface is stable. Canvas surface tension is fairly slack. Moderate craquelure throughout. There is extensive surface dirt; the canvas would greatly benefit from being cleaned. There is a repaired vertical tear to the lower right of the composition. UV light examination reveals some potential areas of overpaint around the sitter's face. There are some extensive markings to the bottom centre of the composition, as well as around the edges of the canvas. The frame is 19th-century century in origin, but it is not completely clear whether it is the original frame. Please see additional photos available on request.
