HUXLEY, THOMAS HENRY PC PRS FLS FRS (1825-1895)SPENCER, HERBERT(1820-1903)CARPENTER, WILLIAM BENJAMIN CB FRS (1813-1885)A letter from professor Huxley to Mr Williams agreeing to dine with him but 'what with work and the Royal Commissions in the present and addresses coming in the future I am hard pressed for time just now'; annotated in pencil adjacent. A letter from Spencer to Mr Williams, asking him, amongst other requests, to secure for him 'a copy of Mark Twain's Tramp Abroad (I think that is the title)' on County Hotel, Carlisle, note paper. A letter from Carpenter to Mrs Williams with regard to a proposed meeting with 'Prof Carus' (Julius Victor Carus, eminent German Zoologist , anatomist and entomologist) on University of London headed notepaper but altered to 17 Saville Row. Huxley, Spencer and Carpenter arguably represent some of the greatest minds of the Victorian period and as such were some of most forward thinking people of the 19th century in subjects such as anthropology, biology, sociology, philosophy, psychology and political theory.
