JAPANESE MEIJI STAINED HARDWOOD, PAINTED COMPOSITION AND METAL MOUNTED CABINET ON STAND, by Shinohara Sairyugyoku, last quarter 19th century, the superstructure with an arrangement of seven drawers with varying types of metal handles, including two cast as auspicious bats, around twin sliding panel doors, each with relief moulded and polychrome figural scenes of groups of Rakan (Arhats), a lift out panel front to a further compartment with recessed and applied carved wood landscape, modelled in the round with a figure beneath a tree, the panel reverse with inscribed character signature; the carved hardwood and metal mounted two tier stand with scrollwork galleries, on stylised stop-fluted supports to cabriole legs with ball and claw feet, the overall dimensions, 169cm high, 84cm wide, 48cm deep Note: Shinohara Sairyugyoku was a member of the Tokyo Chokokai (artisan carvers' guild) and is listed in the 'Tokyo Meiko Kagami' issued in Meiji 12 (1879) as working at the age of 51.
