John Young was born in Perth, Scotland, in 1858. He attested, aged 24 years on June 26th 1882, joining the Durham Light Infantry. He saw service in Egypt in 1885 and 86. He was discharged at Newcastle after serving nearly seven years.

Peter Philips was born in Irongate, Glasgow, in 1857. He attested on July 28th 1876, at age 19. He served in Egypt in 1885 and 1886; he was discharged to a pension at his own request on September 7th 1895.

Peter Martin was born in Glasgow in 1862; he attested, aged 19 on September 15th 1881. He served in Egypt in 1885 and 1886; he was present at the Battle of Ginnis with General Butler. He was discharged in September 1893 after 12 years' service.

Thomas McMann was born in 1879 in Monkwearmouth, Sunderland. He attested for the Durham's on the 1st of May 1898, giving his occupation as Labourer.

McMann served with the 3rd Bn during the Second Boer War and was awarded the Queens South Africa Medal with Cape Colony & Orange Free State bars.

Edward Padden was born in Gateshead in 1869. He was a Labourer and had previously served for seven years in the Northumberland Fusiliers. He attested for the Durham Light Infantry on 25th April 1899. He served during the Boer War and was awarded the QSA; he survived and was discharged on 12th June 1901.

James Cullen was born in Sunderland; he served with the 3rd Bn during the Boer War. He re-joined in 1904 and served up until 1919. Soon after discharge, he joined again, serving in the occupation army in Germany.
