Walter James Gomm was born in Chinnor, Oxfordshire, on the 25th of March 1881. A Farm Labourer in civilian life.

Gomm qualified for the Pair only. He won the Military Medal while attached to 'FAA Btty', and the award was announced in the London Gazette on 2nd of November 1917. After his discharge in 1919, he joined the Royal Marines on the 20th of March 1919, giving his birth year as 1887.
