Note: Admiral Pulteney Malcom was a distinguished captain and colleague of Nelson. He took part in the chase of the French Fleet to the West Indies prior to Trafalgar, and only narrowly missed the battle as his ship, the Donegal, was in Gibraltar. Collingwood said: “Everybody was sorry Malcolm was not there because everybody knows his spirit, and his skill would have acquired him honour. He got out of the Gut when nobody else could and was of infinite service to us after the action”. In HMS Donegal he provided valuable assistance during the storm after the battle, capturing the Rayo, saving many of the French crew on the wrecked Berwick, and taking charge of the Spanish “Bahama”.
