seated in an interior gazing upwards, inscribed on a label on the reverse identifying the sitter and the artist as "Sir Joshua Reynolds" and with the date 1773, oil on canvas, 127cm x 102cm

Provenance: The Murray family at Polmaise Castle, Cambusbarron, Scotland, and thence by descent.

This powerful portrait was traditionally identified as a work by Sir Joshua Reynolds as indicated by the old label on the frame. Current opinion is that a full attribution to David Martin is more tenable.
