France. Saint Helena Medal (Médaille de Sainte-Hélène).

The medal was instituted on 12 August 1857 by Emperor Napoleon III to ‘honour with a special distinction the soldiers who fought under the flag of France in the great wars of 1792 to 1815’ and awarded to survivors of the wars of Revolution and Empire some 42 years after their end.

It was designed by the great medalist Désiré-Albert Barre and produced by the Imperial Mint in Paris.

The Medal was instituted by Imperial Decree of 11 August 1859 and awarded to the soldiers of the Army of Italy and sailors who participated in the French war against Austria, allied to Sardinia, that was a major step towards the unification of Italy.

The reverse is inscribed with the names of the significant battles of the campaign: Montebello, Palestro, Turbigo, Magenta, Marignan and Solferino

The Medal was made from the bronze of cannons captured from the Kraton (Palace) of Mahmud Syah.

Herbert Clidero was born in Northallerton, North Yorkshire, in 1897. He was educated at Northallerton Grammar School. Herbert was commissioned as Temporary Second Lieutenant on the 30th of January 1918.

While attached to the 8th West Yorks when he was killed in action on the 1st of September 1918. He is buried in Vaulx Hill Cemetery.
