John William Ellwood was born in Frosterly, Durham, in 1882. He worked in the local quarry and was a member of the Territorial Army, serving with the 1st 6th Bn of the Durham Light Infantry. Ellwood went to
France April 20th 1915 with the Bn and was sadly killed in action six days later on April 26th. He is remembered on the Menin Gate.

With Anchor brooch in HMS Bulwark tobacco tine.
Condition GVF.
John Charles Biles was a Kitchen Attendant from Southampton. He joined the Royal Navy in 1906. He was posted to HMS Bulwark in August 1914 and was killed on November 26th 1914, when the ship exploded due to improperly stored ammunition.

Seven hundred forty-one men were killed, with only a dozen ratings rescued. All the officers were killed in the accident.

He was sadly killed in action on April 19th 1917, while serving on SS Sowwell. The vessel was a steam cargo ship; she was sunk by German Submarine U-35 170 nautical miles from Gibraltar.
